Past vs Present light heavyweight champions. Tommy Loughran vs Thomas Hearns. Who win

To me, Hearns was just not a natural light heavyweight. He had enormous power at welter and better than average at middleweight, but would not be able to hurt the naturally bigger and stronger Loughran who was also one of the classiest boxers ever to step in the ring with great movement and a great jab. Loughran was not a power puncher but threw a lot of leather. Loughran wins this fight by decision as he did most of his contests.

loughran, who once took on primo carnera, who outweighted him by 90 pounds, is just too fast for the hit man in this matchup.

loughran is head and shoulders above the respected virgil hill.

You guys r missing gannoway is point, this is a boxing match, not a power punching contest with Tommy Loughran vs Thomas Hearns. Hearns was not the killer puncher at light heavyweight that he was at the lower weights, even with the KO over Leonzer Barber that netted Hearns his light heavyweight title. But Hearns was a gifted boxer at any weight.

So was Tommy Loughran, so gifted in fact Loughran was by news paper accounts able to decision none other than Harry Greb. Loughran did fight a lot of his era is heavyweights, even beat a couple of heavyweight champs (Baer & Braddock) long before either of them won the title, but Loughran beat them with speed & lateral movement, not power. For all his hall of fame accomplishments, Loughran is chin, much like Thomas Hearns, was his biggest flaw, & going in against Thomas Hearns with a questionable chin at any weight is a risky proposition. Loughran did not have comparable power to Hearns, despite Loughran is success at heavyweight.

This one would have been a chess match, not a slug fest, & the size of each others opponents would not have been a factor, neither would the fragile chins of both fighters, each was a spectacular & skilled boxer, & that is where the fight would be won or lost.

l agree with toughguys & maurice is assessments, but not their conclusions, Hearns by decision in one of history is classic fights.
