The first 4 rounds were amazing, but then jones faded. Im just wondering how great a bout it would have been ten years ago or eight years ago when Jones was super competitive.

Why did not this fight happen a loooong time ago, it would've been the greatest bout of all time!

l do not know about Calzaghe but l do not think Jones was near a light heavyweight back then

At the time, Jones was making big money fights in the U.S. and was champion. It would not have benefitted Jones to fight a no-name while he was rising to super-stardom. And l believe that Joe is poor promotion in his earlier years was also a factor.

l believe ten years ago, it would've made for a great fight. IMO Jones would have beaten Joe by decision. Jones truly was ''superman'' and was untouchable.

Because nobody knew who joe calzaghe was back then and it wouldnt have made big money.Boxing has been ruined by money for years,most of the fighters want the fights but the promoters get in the way and refuse to set the fights up

Back then, Calzaghe had a mental illness called agora-welsha-phobia. He had the uncontrollable fear of fighting anywhere outside his hometown.

l do not have much to add because all of the before me are great ! In the business of boxing you do 2 things, maximize your earning potential and minimize your chances losing your title or messing up your opportunity of a title fight.

At the time: 1998/1999 (when the fight was mooted), Roy never fought ''no-name Calzaghe but fought a ''big money fight'' against Ricky Frazier - a full time NYPD cop! ''Having turned pro at 32 years of age, Frazier had never won a bout of consequence [upon fighting Jones]. Commentator Gil Clancy even remarked on the air that ''Frazier has no offense at all.. l do not think he could even hurt me.'' Frazier was blown away in 2 rounds. So, on that anlysis, Calzaghe, a full-time pro, would have offered a much sterner test than Ricky Frazier, a full-time cop.

At the time Roy fought Frazier (and a Calzaghe fight was mooted), Roy was said to be getting a little complacent, after more or less breaking Virgil Hill in half. Calzaghe had just won the WBO Super Middle title from Eubank in 1998. Roy was up at 175. Therefore if the fight had happened ten years ago, the onus would have been on Calzaghe to move up to 175 to fight Jones (therefore keeping the 168 Ib title, unless he won the fight), & to go to America to have the fight. l believe it was Ron Borges who intimated Roy is unwillingness to travel outside of the USA to fight stemmed from the fact that he believed that most of the big fights happened in the US anyway, so he would not need to, & also due to the fact that he was burned by the judges in the 1988 Olympic final. He felt he would not want to run the risk of that happening again. Alas, it did not happen, as Joe is promoter back then, Frank Warren, was incredibly protective of him, obviously feeling that if he went to the States for a big fight, as this one would have been, he would have gotten jobbed by the judges.

Roy was not rising to superstardom in 1998.he was already there, & had been since outclassing James Toney in 1994. Roy was in his prime then, whereas Calzaghe is prime was 2005-2007 - in hindsight, Joe was nowhere near his prime as a fighter in 1998-1999. If the fight between Jones Jr & Calzaghe did happen ten years ago, looking at Roy is record then, & the way he was just totally outclasing people, there r only two possible results, in my view - either Jones stops Calzaghe, or Jones wins by a wide Unanimous Decision - possibly a shutout. Back then, Jones was just THAT GOOD.

in 2002 calzaghe challenged jones and jones was scared!

it was never going to happen, jones was busy knocking the sh1te out of nobodys, calzaghe challenged him but there was more money in fighting an american nobody, something the yanks seem to forget when they say joe ran from jones.
